Watanuki is a high school student in Japan, but that's pretty much where his life stops being normal. He is a walking magnet for ghosts and spirits, and spends a lot of time being followed and harrassed by them. He's stubborn and doesn't like to be bossed around, and can often be seen flailing about and yelling. One of his classmates has the ability to repel the spirits that bother Watanuki, but he has a one-sided rivalry with him, and doesn't like him very much. Watanuki is currently employed by Yuuko Ichihara, who runs a shop that grants wishes. He is her all-purpose errand-boy/maid/chef, working in exchange for her one day granting his wish of not being able to see or be affected by the spirit world.
